Denise Welch has finally settled a long drawn-out social media rumour about her gender identity after her son Matty Healy quizzed her about them.
The Loose Women and Waterloo Road star has been the subject of lighthearted tweets since last year which speculate the Geordie actress is in fact non-binary.

Speaking on her podcast, Denise Welch’s Juicy Crack, on Sunday, she said: “Matty texted me this morning going ‘Mum, why is everyone saying you’re non-binary?’”
The 64-year-old then says she did a deep dive into Twitter and that: “Apparently I’ve been non-binary since April 2022.”
She concludes: “There is no rhyme or reason why this started but if you put in Twitter ‘Denise Welch non-binary’ I’ve been non-binary for a year- who knew?” before returning to her breakfast yoghurt.

Hide AdBack in 2022 someone jokingly tweeted: ‘Words can’t explain how happy I am that Denise Welch is non-binary. I’m sorry, but I can’t physically imagine the concept of Denise Welch being binary.’
Another tweeted: ‘Denise Welch being non binary has to be one of the funniest hun twitter joke, pure absurdist gold it always makes me chuckle.’
Non-binary means a person does not conform to traditional binary beliefs about gender which suggest individuals are exclusively male or female, opting for they/them pronouns.
Although the North East icon doesn’t explicitly deny the rumours, the disbelief in Denise’s retelling of events suggest she’s very much poking fun at the long-running rumours.
