Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service confirmed that they have five appliances in attendance and do not yet know the cause of the fire.
However, it is confirmed to be a grass fire and the service warned that "dry conditions do lead to fires spreading rapidly so we need your help to prevent them" - pleading that people do not light bonfires or have BBQs in areas of grass.
Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service added: "We are experiencing a large number of calls about a fire in Ryton Willows which is visible on the other side of the River.
"We have appliances on scene but avoid the area if possible.
"We know it's hot but please keep your windows and doors closed."
