The North East Ambulance Service attended the scene at 6:46 pm on Wednesday evening and transported the patient to the RVI for "further treatment".

A long police cordon had been put in place and closed off Grainger Street from The Mile Castle to Savers - this was lifted at around 10 am on Thursday.

Eye-witnesses have spoken of hearing screaming outside the popular Newcastle pub, as well as an armed response from police and a man lying on the ground.

Some shop-owners were also unable to open for businesses this morning as the cordon remained in place.
