Murder probe after Northumbria University student found dead at Mansion Tyne in Newcastle

A murder investigation has been launched after a Northumbria University student was found dead at accommodation site Mansion Tyne in Newcastle.

The 24-year-old scholar was pronounced dead at the scene when Northumbria Police arrived on Tuesday afternoon. A 21-year-old man, who is believed to have known the deceased, has been arrested.

A Northumbria University spokesperson said: “We are deeply saddened to confirm that a Northumbria University student has died. We are in contact with the student’s family and friends to offer any support we can at this tragic time. As this is an ongoing police investigation we are unable to comment further."

Police had cordoned off the accommodation block on Howard Street but that has now been lifted. Student are accessing Mansion Tyne accommodation as usual and many only found out about the death via an email on Thursday morning.

NewcastleWorld heard from students outside Manstion Tyne who said it was like “nothing has changed” and others, who did notice a police presence on Tuesday, “thought it was a drugs bust”. Another student described the scenes inside the accommodation as “it’s mad, there’s people everywhere.”

Forensics gathered evidence from the student halls on Thursday and an email distributed to residents reassured them that “the incident in question poses no future risk to our staff or residents and the premises remain completely secure and clear of any danger”.

A North East Ambulance Service spokesperson said:"We received a 999 call on Tuesday 27 September at 16:31 to concerns for a person at a private address on Howard Street in Newcastle. We sent two ambulance teams and police also attended the scene. For patient confidentiality reasons we are unable to comment further."

A Force spokesperson said: “Shortly before 4.30pm on Tuesday police received a report of concern for the welfare of a man inside an address on Howard Street, Newcastle.

“Police and emergency services attended but sadly a 24-year-old man was confirmed as deceased.

“While enquiries are at an early stage, a murder investigation has been launched and a 21-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident. He remains in custody at this time.

“It is believed the two men were known to each other and there is no risk to the wider public, but officers will remain in the area.

“The man’s next of kin have been informed and are currently being supported by specialist officers.”
