The new venue on Newgate Street is hoping to help continue to build a thriving local scene.

Newcastle's newest venue Newgate Social is opening its doors next month. Located above The WonderBar venue in The Gate, the 400 capacity venue plans to support and promote both emerging and established talent from across the North East and beyond.

To celebrate the grand opening, the venue is hosting a Late 'n' Live live music quiz, which will be the opening preview event at this newly opened 400-capacity venue.

Taking place on Friday, August 9, the event will be hosted by local musicians and organisers can’t wait to get the venue open.

“It’s been going really well” said Maria Winter of Marisam Events, the team behind the night.

“We’ve had great anticipation for it and we’re really excited for the night.

“All the staff really want to promote, support and showcase local and emerging bands. That’s exactly what we do through Late and Live.

“It’s so important to promote local musicians a bit more.”

Billed as Newcastle’s first and only live music quiz, the event is hosted and performed by local musicians where every round is a music round.

“It’s a full night of unique, interactive entertainment” added Maria.

“We’ve already got a new music showcase called Elevate 22, that’s scheduled to start in September.”

These events see local bands play a short set with an audience choosing their favourites through a QR code, with the winners getting development funding or an artist residency. The new events will give artists the chance to perform a headline slot at the new venue.

“The [music] scene is incredible here” adds Maria.

“You’ve got a massive scene in London and Manchester, but you don’t have the same connections as you do up here. We only launched Marisam Events just over a year ago and we’ve found how quickly we’ve been able to get in touch with people, whether it be venue owners, promoters, everyone is so willing to help.

“We’ve found it to be a really nice collaborative scene and I think this North East events scene is on the brink of an innovative shift.

The venue has already hosted a couple of smaller events in the build up to its grand opening with battle of the bands events taking place to decide who wins a set at Hardwick Festival later this summer.

Tickets for the live music quiz are available now through Fatsoma ticketing.
