Thursday Metro update: Man on tracks, signal failure and pop up vaccines

Part of the Tyne and Wear Metro system ground to a halt on Thursday morning.

Northumbria Police were called to an incident on the track shortly before 7 am on Thursday, February 3.

Services were halted and delays and the incident progressed.

Police incident at Tyne Dock

A Tweet from Tyne and Wear Metro at 7:22 am stated: “Due to a police incident in the Tyne Dock area, there are delays to the service towards South Shields and towards Newcastle.

“We will update you further as soon as we have any additional information.”

Reports stated that a man had been seen on the tracks, which was stopping trains from progressing.

Northumbria Police confirmed: ““Shortly before 7am today (Thursday) we received a report of concern for the welfare of a male who was seen walking on the tracks between Chichester and Tyne Dock Metro stations.

Emergency services attended and officers have since located the male in question. He has taken to hospital as a precaution and left in the care of medical professionals.”

At 8:04 am the Metro confirmed that the situation had been resolved.

Points failure in South Gosforth

However, there was another problem in store for commuters this morning.

A points failure in the South Gosforth area meant delays to trains operating between South Gosforth and St James.

Around 15 minutes later, the Metro also confirmed that the failure had been resolved.

Haymarket Station pop-up vaccine centre

Elsewhere on the Metro service today, Haymarket station is hosting a pop up vaccination clinic.

Operators are helping the drive to get boosted with the scheme running every Tuesday and Thursday in February.
