Tributes pour in after ‘revolutionary’ Malcolm Dix dies at age of 79

Tributes to Malcolm Dix have come flooding in after it was announced that the Newcastle United figurehead has died at the age of 79.

The news of Malcolm's passing broke today, Wednesday November 10, after he had suffered from a short illness.

Malcolm's passion for Newcastle United football club led him to become a key figure in changing the ownership structure from father-to-son to the more modern single owner style.

The ‘revolutionary’ campaigner’s work eventually helped lead to John Hall’s takeover of the club, the arrival of Kevin Keegan and heyday of The Entertainers.

The much-loved figurehead went on to become an honorary vice president of the club and became known as the People's Champion.

During his life, Malcolm was also heavily involved with Sport Newcastle and Newcastle Gosforth Rugby Club.

He also dabbled in the music scene on Tyneside.

Newcastle fans have taken to social media in the hours following the announcement of Malcolm's passing to share their tributes.

NUFC Fans Food Bank wrote: " The very first Supporter for Change and one of The Magpie Group who revolutionised @NUFC, a great man who did so much for local charities, local sport & the football club for whom he was honorary Vice-President and one of the club’s best-ever #NUFC fans."

Sport Newcastle shared: "We are extremely saddened to learn of the passing of Sport Newcastle President, Malcolm Dix aged 79.

"Malcolm will be fondly remembered as 'Mr Sport Newcastle'

"We extend our deepest sympathies to Malcolm's family and friends at this sad time.

"Rest in peace, Malcolm."

One fan said: "So sad to read about the passing of Malcolm Dix, he fought long and hard for this club through the really bad times. Along with Sir John Hall he created the club as we know it today. RIP."

Another wrote: "Sad news with the passing of Malcolm Dix,he seemed to fight a one-man battle against the old board, a lovely fella who loved our great club."
