Tynemouth Surf Cafe is closing its doors after it was served with a lease end notice from its landlord.

An independent music venue, bar and cafe, the Surf Cafe has been a prominent place on the North Tyneside coastline for many years hosting so many of the North East's up-and-coming artists over the years from Sam Fender to Andrew Cushin.

In a statement the Surf Cafe said:

"It's with deep sorrow that we have to bring you some sad news this Christmas time.

Due to factors completely out of our control, our landlord has decided to force the closure of our beloved Surf Cafe with immediate effect.

Despite numerous attempts and seemingly positive dialogue with the landlord over the past few weeks, a decision has been made to call time on our favourite hang out by the sea.

In the wake of repeated letters and calls to the landlord over the past 7 days, further contact with them has been nothing short of impossible and we have been served with a lease end notice, citing today (Monday 18th December) as our final day in business - a move that now seems a little calculated.

We never envisaged that this day would come and having to inform our staff one week before Christmas that they no longer have a job with us is nothing short of heartbreaking.

We want to place on record a huge thank you to the local community and our visitors from all over the world who we've been proud to serve and call friends.

And to the bands and artists that have performed here over the years, thank you. We've had so many special nights and we're honoured to have assisted your careers in our own little way.

But first and foremost, a huge debt of gratitude goes out to our amazing team and staff.

It should not be ending this way, and we'll be doing all we can to find new employment for them in one of our other venues.

We want more than anything for the Surf Cafe journey to continue, and if anyone out there has thoughts on where we could relocate, we'd love to hear from you.

We will also be speaking to the local council as we actively look for a new home.  We hope to be back with an update soon.

With that, peace and love to all this Christmas time.

And thank you for the good times, from the bottom of our hearts.
