Witness appeal as woman left seriously injured after city centre crash

A woman who was knocked off her bike in the Newcastle city centre has been left with potentially life-threatening injuries.

The serious collision took place at around 9:20 am on New Year's Day on St Lawrence Road.

A car collided with the cyclist and the woman was taken to hospital with serious injuries.

The driver of the car, a 29-year-old male, was arrested on suspicion of causing serious injury by dangerous driving and remains in police custody at this time.

An investigation has been launched and police are now appealing for any witnesses to the collision, especially anyone who might have dashcam footage, to come forward.

Inspector Dean Hood from Northumbria Police’s Motor Patrols department said: “This is a very serious incident which has left a woman in a critical condition in hospital.

"The road serves as the main entry point for those living in St Peter’s Basin so we are now asking for anyone who may have seen what happened, to contact us as we try to establish exactly what has happened."
