It doesn’t matter if the weather is bright and sunny or wet and bleak - us northerners are always in the mood for some fish and chips.

After the news of Whitley Bay chippy Fisherman’s Bay being nominated for a prestigious award, we decided to create a list of the best fish and chip shops in the North East. From traditional chippy’s to seafood haven’s, it’s all here!

Colmans Fish and Chips

Located on Ocean Road in South Shields, this fish and chip shop has been serving delicious food for decades. They now have a successful seafood restaurant, also in South Shields named Colmans Seafood Temple with a takeaway underneath. It is now internationally renowned and has won many awards over the years. They serve a variety of traditional favourites alongside vegan dishes.

Crusoe’s

Crusoe’s in Tynemouth is loved by many residents and visitors of the seaside town because it has a modern and unique edge on a conventional chippy. They also have a coffee shop, and a street food menu where they serve a variety of wraps and seafood among many other options.

Fisherman’s Bay

It seems only right to include Fisherman’s Bay on our list after their recent good news. The Whitley Bay chip shop is family owned and operated like many others on our list, and prides itself on bringing back the nostalgia of a classic northern chippy. The family behind Fisherman’s Bay have 25 years worth of experience in the fish and chip industry, and have created an affordable menu that caters to everyone.

Riley’s Fish Shack

Riley’s is so successful that it has its own merchandise! The fish shack located in Tynemouth sources their fresh fish from local day boats, and cooked over a real charcoal BBQ. All of their fish is sustainably sourced, as again is some of the others on this list. The fish bar has received praise from famous food critic Jay Rayner, as he said of them: “I have found the eating experience of the year.”

Longsands Fish Kitchen

Another resident of Tynemouth (that place really knows how to do fish and chips), Longsands. The award winning fish and chip shop work with local food producers to ensure food traceability. They serve traditional fish and chip dishes, but also have the inclusion of a vegan, a gluten free and a children’s menu.

Anyone else really in the mood for fish and chips now?
