Erin Nelson played a starring role in Newcastle United Women’s 6-0 thrashing of Bradford City on Sunday afternoon - but admits there’s still more to come.

Nelson has had to battle with off-field problems, including a major injury for the majority of this season which has restricted her to just six league appearances.

However, during the run-in, Nelson has become a very dependable and threat in Newcastle’s side, showcased on Sunday when she netted two goals in the first half.

The local lass has been delighted to finally get a chance to impress and make an impact this season with back-to-back appearances against Leeds United and Bradford respectively.

“You’ve just got to prove yourself every week,” Nelson said. “I feel like I’ve been ticking every week off as it goes and now I’m finally being given my chance and I’ve taken it.”

Manager Becky Langley is almost spoiled for choice when it comes to who plays on the right-hand side with Kacie Elson a prominent figure on the left. But as things stand, Nelson is getting the nod.

Nelson is now thriving in the black and white - but she never thought that would be the case this season given her long-term injury at the beginning of the campaign.

The Lady Magpies will win promotion and lift the FA Women’s National League Division One North title on the final day at Barnsley this weekend if they match Durham Cestria’s result.

“It’s been amazing, obviously you want to return and make an impact,” Nelson added. The start of this season was a bit of a write-off for me and I thought this season would just be one to get me going.

“I’ve only played a few games but to come in and get goals and assists and help get our goal difference up, it’s what I want to do. I want to make an impact on the team and I want to win the league.”
