Alan Shearer gives his opinion on Newcastle United’s ‘brilliant’ Player of the Season - do you agree?

Alan Shearer believes Anthony Gordon deserved to be crowned Newcastle United’s Player of the Season.

The Toon winger scooped the club’s annual award earlier this month for his heroics throughout 2023-24. Gordon enjoyed a breakout year on Tyneside - with 23 goal contributions across all competitions.

His heroics earned him a maiden international bow ahead of the Euros this summer. England boss Gareth Southgate was impressed by Gordon, hailing the Newcastle man as “outstanding” following his debut against Brazil.

Gordon’s continued performances led to his inclusion in the Three Lions’ provision 33-man squad for this summer’s tournament. That marked a stark difference from a year ago when a section of fans questioned the 23-year-old’s £40million arrival.

By his admission, Gordon struggled to adapt to Eddie Howe’s relentless training demands. But a stellar under-21s Euro last summer - where he won Player of the Tournament as England stormed to victory - laid the foundations for a much-improved campaign at Newcastle.

Bruno Guimaraes and Alexander Isak rivalled Gordon for the club’s annual award but watched on as the winger lapped up the praise. He also received the seal of approval from all-time leading goalscorer Shearer, who named Gordon as the Magpies’ star performer.

“I have to say that I think Anthony Gordon has been absolutely brilliant in his first proper season at Newcastle,” Gary Lineker, The Rest Is Football podcast host, said. Shearer replied: “He has been Newcastle’s best player this season!”

The Newcastle legend previously hailed Gordon's attributes and performances earlier in the campaign. Shearer said: “He has been brilliant. His goals are superb, but I think his attitude. I am always very reluctant to praise players’ work-rate and commitment because it should be a given.

“But his is exceptional. He sets the tone for Newcastle when they press. He is the trigger. When he goes, everyone has to go. He has so much energy.”
