Newcastle United plan to rest Alexander Isak for Sunday’s FA Cup third round tie at home to League Two side Bromley (kick-off 3pm).

Isak netted his 15th goal of the campaign in the 2-0 Carabao Cup first-leg semi-final victory at Arsenal on Tuesday night but was withdrawn on the hour-mark after complaining about his hamstring.

The Sweden international won’t be risked against Bromley but is expected to return for the Premier League clash against Wolverhampton Wanderers three days later.

“We think he is pretty good,” said United boss Eddie Howe. “He’s seeing his physio at the moment, giving him a couple of days rest but we think he is in a good place. He’ll report back tomorrow [Saturday] and we’ll have a good look at him.

“We would have probably involved him in the game in some way but I think with what has happened, he’ll probably be given this game to rest and get himself right for the future schedule we have.”

Isak has scored in all but one of his last nine matches, superbly carrying the goalscoring burden in the absence of Callum Wilson.

Wilson missed the opening four months of the 2024-25 campaign after sustaining a back injury during the second week of pre-season. He returned at the end of November but after four substitute appearances suffered a setback.

The 32-year-old - out of contract in June - was scheduled to resume some kind of outdoor training on Friday with the hope of him returning to action at the beginning of February.

Howe told NewcastleWorld: “Callum, I think, is on the grass today [Friday]. I don't think he is training with the first team yet but he is on the grass. He's making good progress actually, we've been really pleased.

“Such a difficult situation for him, he didn't feel quite right after the end of the game against Brentford. As we know, he went for a scan and the scan, unfortunately, picked up sort of a bigger problem than he felt, he didn't feel it was a big issue but it meant for weeks on the sidelines for him, but he's in a good place.

“He's normal Callum, very, very focused on his return. He could be coming back, if all goes to plan, around the beginning of February. He could be coming back at a massive time for us with some huge games so he's very focused on his comeback.”
