Alexander Isak not good enough for Inter Milan or Bayern Munich - Newcastle United supporters raging

Former Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Jamie O’Hara believes Alexander Isak is nowhere near being the world’s best striker.

Newcastle United supporters have been blown away by the Swede this season. After his eight-game goal run came to an abrupt end last week, Isak got back on the score sheet with a ruthless brace against Southampton.

While his first came from the spot, the second was a clinical one-on-one finish that showed why Toon chiefs have slapped a £150million price tag around his neck. Isak is now two behind Mohamed Salah in the Golden Boot race despite a slow start to 2024-25.

Some have highlighted his all-round game as a reason to crown the 25-year-old as the world’s best striker. However, former Premier League star O’Hara is not sold, going as far as to name Lautaro Martinez, Harry Kane and Erling Haaland ahead of him.

This provoked a fierce rebuffal from ex-England international Jay Bothroyd - who laid out why he believes Isak is No.1. He told Sky Sports: “I know you (O’Hara) love Haaland but, at the end of the day, he’s a great goalscorer. If he doesn’t get the service, he’s going to find it hard to have any effect on a game.

“When you look at Isak, he can create his own goals. He’s more of a team player, can run in behind and has a better understanding of what midfielders and wingers want. Haaland is a great goalscorer, there’s absolutely no doubt about it.

“He’ll go down as one of the best goalscorers ever. But when I describe who the best strikers are, I’m looking at people like Isak because of his overall game.

“What? Erling Haaland on current form? On current form? Who’s in better form, Isak or him? Isak is at Newcastle, it’s different than if he were at Man City.”

One furious Newcastle fan called O’Hara a “clown” for dismissing Isak’s qualities. He wrote: “If Isak were at Man United, Man City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Inter Milan, Barcelona etc and had the exact same goals and performances, people would say he’s best on current form but, because it’s Newcastle, Jamie acts like a clown.”
