Newcastle United hit with new injury blow as Eddie Howe provides update ahead of Wolves clash.

Newcastle United will be without Harvey Barnes for Wednesday night’s Premier League clash at home to Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Barnes started the Magpies’ 3-1 FA Cup third round win against Bromley on Sunday afternoon but had to be withdrawn at half-time.

United boss Eddie Howe has confirmed the £38million winger is set to spend a month on the sidelines.

“Harvey will be missing for a period of time, we don’t think it is a serious injury bit it will be enough to keep him out for a few weeks. I think we’re probably looking around a month - don’t hold me to that.

“He’s had a scan and it’s not too bad but it will be enough to keep him out. He’ll definitely miss the upcoming games.

“It’s an injury to his thigh, a muscle in his thigh. He did it crossing a ball towards the end of the first half. He felt he could carry on until half-time but then it became apparent that he couldn’t come out for the second-half.”

Meanwhile, Newcastle hope Alexander Isak, Sven Botman, Jacob Murphy and Joe Willock will return tomorrow after they weren’t risked against Bromley.

“We’ll have a look at them again today, they were left out with genuine things, all of different things but nothing major we hope, minor problems that we needed to settle down. Fingers crossed they will be there for thereabouts.”

Asked specifically about Isak, Howe replied: “He will be there or thereabouts. We haven’t seen him train yet, fingers crossed he will be.”

A goal for Isak against Wolves would see him break Alan Shearer and Joe Willock’s club record by scoring in an eighth consecutive Premier League match.

“He’ll be desperate to play, of course, those runs I’m not really too focused on or interested in but I understand the individuals will care deeply about them.

“I’d love Alex to continue to score. The most important thing for me is the team is functioning well for him and he is functioning well for the team - the two things go hand in hand together.

“We have looked like scoring goals recently, that’s such a big thing for our confidence level. He’s played a big part in that and hopefully that continues.”
