Amanda Staveley was "very proud" of Newcastle United at the weekend - despite it ending in defeats for both the men and women's team.

Eddie Howe's side welcomed Manchester City to St James' Park on Saturday night and went toe-to-toe with the Premier League champions, however lost to Oscar Bobb's injury time winner.

United initially fought back from 1-0 down after Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon cancelled out Bernardo Silva's opener. But the introduction of Kevin de Bruyne midway through the second-half inspired the visitors to victory as the Belgian claimed a goal and assist.

And less than 24 hours later, Newcastle Women visited Super League side Manchester United in the FA Cup fourth round. Two divisions separate to the two teams and that showed in the 5-0 score line, but the result, in many ways, was irrelevant.

Indeed, the Lady Magpies were backed by over 1,000 Geordies at Leigh Sports Village on a iconic day for Becky Langley's side and Women's football in general. The travelling support praise from Reds Devils manager Marc Skinner and Lioness goalkeeper Mary Earps. Posting to Instagram on Sunday night, Staveley revealed her pride in a message to supporters. The Newcastle co-owner said: "Very proud of both our men's and women's team performances. It wasn't our weekend but we will come back stronger. I'm also overwhelmed by the support of our amazing fans - some who were travelling at 6am this morning! We are United."

Howe's men have gone through a tough run of late with six defeats in seven Premier League matches seeing them slip to 10th in the table. They will now hope to take full advantage of a short break before resuming the season away to Fulham in the FA Cup on January 30.

Meanwhile, the Lasses' will hope to cement their place at the top of the Northern Premier Division and earn promotion in the Championship.

Incredibly, the Lady Magpies' defeat to Man United was their first for 399 days.
