Bruno Guimaraes - and his father - have become cult heroes for Newcastle United supporters

Bruno Guimaraes’ father has hailed his son as a “great professional” following Newcastle United’s 2023-24 campaign.

Dick Guimaraes, a former taxi driver who serves as the inspiration behind the midfielder’s No.39 shirt, has become a cult hero on Tyneside. The proud dad attends every game home and away and has been regularly snapped by Toon fans joining in with iconic chants.

A language barrier has done little to negate the Geordie adulation, with Dick happy to take selfies with fans around the city. The love stems from his son’s special relationship built with Newcastle supporters since arriving in January 2022.

Guimaraes immediately immersed himself into Tyneside life and has been arguably the standout player of the post-takeover era. Newcastle desperately want to keep the £100million man, who is attracting interest from European heavyweights ahead of the summer window.

Writing on social media, the midfielder thanked supporters while admitting injuries impacted Newcastle’s campaign. Guimaraes posted on social media: “We've reached the end of another season and I couldn't let it pass without thanking our fans and sharing my thoughts on everything we've been through this year.

“It has been a huge mix of emotions but I'm certain that I gave my best at all times, as did the entire team. It was a season full of injuries and I'm sure we could have done much more if we had been at full strength. Even so, I think we achieved a lot with the little we had this year. Personally, it was a great pleasure to be present in 50 out of 51 games this year.

“Taking the club back to the Champions League after 20 years is something we will never forget and I'm sure we deserved better luck. This is yet another season that will stay in our memories and serve as an example for the ones to come!”

Guimaraes Sr responded with a heartwarming message - giving insight into his son’s life away from the pitch. He wrote: “Deserving to have everything that is going on in your life, a great professional, an excellent husband, a great father and an example as a son. May God continue to bless my son always.”
