Newcastle United set to investigate major injury concern - fears player could be out 'long-term'

Newcastle United team news: Anthony Elanga is set for a scan next week.

Newcastle United are fearing a potentially serious injury blow for winger Anthony Elanga.

The 24-year-old missed Monday’s 4-1 defeat at Leeds United due to an injury picked up away from the match and is set for an MRI scan next week.

Elanga had made a positive start to the season, scoring in each of Newcastle’s opening two league matches Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur, the latter of which won him the Premier League goal of the month award for August.

But Elanga’s absence, which was not confirmed until Newcastle’s team news dropped ahead of the Premier League clash at Elland Road, comes as a concerning blow with the winger now set to be out for an extended period, pending further assessment.

Newcastle head coach Matthias Jaissle said: “It could be long term. He will get another MRI next week and we will see.

“Anthony Elanga is obviously struggling with an injury, we need to further now investigate how serious it is but at the moment it doesn’t look too good.
