Matthias Jaissle and Newcastle United star in agreement after Everton defeat - this is concerning

Newcastle United’s 1-0 defeat to Everton was their fifth loss in their last seven matches.

Matthias Jaissle and Dan Burn admit Newcastle United are low on confidence after back-to-back defeats to Everton.

The Magpies were dumped out of the Carabao Cup at the last 16 stage last Thursday after losing 3-1 on Merseyside and couldn’t get revenge after slipping to a 1-0 defeat in the Premier League at St James’ Park.

Thierno Barry, who scored the Toffees’ third goal in the cup match, scored the winner on Tyneside in the 49th minute after capitalising on a mistake from goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek.

It wasn’t until the 85th-minute that United registered their first shot on target. At the full-time whistle, Jaissle and his players were subjected to boos, having now lost five of their last seven matches in all competitions.

"Disappointed, frustrated,” Burn said after the game. “Much of the same in the last few games - between the boxes we do OK, but we're not ruthless enough going forward or defending our own box.

"When you're not winning games, there's always a lack of confidence. The fans weren't happy. They have shown that at half-time and full-time. That doesn't make it easy to build confidence when you're in that atmosphere.

"But I've been a fan, so I understand the frustrations when they're not getting what they're expecting.

“That wasn't a Newcastle performance like we've expected in the last three or four years, so I can completely understand the frustrations. It doesn't make it easier for us as players. You can sense that nervousness in the ground."

Burn’s view on the mood in the dressing room was shared by his manager.

“At the moment, it's a bit difficult,” Jaissle said. “If the results are not there, if the goals are not coming easily, then you lack confidence. That's normal as a human being, but to come out of that, that's only possible as a unit.

“You need to now stick together. Every one of us, we saw that we are capable of that in the training week. We saw the elements, we saw that they can also refuel the potential. Now it's about making that transfer in the next game.”

Next up for Newcastle is a trip to Fulham on Saturday before the season pauses for the two-week international break.
