Mauricio Pochettino has stayed coy when grilled about specific transfer targets just hours after Chelsea were linked with Callum Wilson.

Earlier reports claimed the Blues are considering an approach for Newcastle United’s number nine. Wilson is currently sidelined with a calf injury and has not played since the Boxing Day defeat to Nottingham Forest.

Another frustrating campaign has resulted in the 31-year-old missing several key fixtures for the Magpies through injury. Astonishingly, Wilson has been sidelined for 34 per cent of Newcastle’s Premier League fixtures since arriving three-and-a-half years ago.

Chelsea have struggled with their striker options in recent years - averaging just a goal per game last season to endure their worst Premier League campaign. Summer recruit Nicolas Jackson has struggled to fill that void and an experienced bagsman like Wilson could take the weight off his shoulders.

Speaking ahead of their FA Cup clash against Aston Villa, Blues boss Pochettino batted off a question about potential incomings - with Chelsea also reportedly interested in Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran. He told reporters: “Well I think we are listening to too many rumours, you know? Player in, player out, like in other clubs. At the moment, (I have) nothing to say.

"We work really hard on different things, different areas, but, at the moment, (there is) nothing to communicate. We will communicate if something happens in the next few days. I am happy with the squad, I am so happy with the players that we have.

“And then, of course, if something happens, because you know very well – and we know very well – that always the last week is the most dangerous week. We need to be ready for anything that can happen with the squad.”
