Aston Villa are closing in on Barcelona star Raphinha amid reported interest from Newcastle United.

That is according to The Mirror, who claim a merry-go-round between the three clubs could leave the Magpies empty-handed. All three have been linked with moves for Spain superstar Nico Williams, the wideman who ripped up Euro 2024 and scored the opener against England in the final.

Barca appear most likely to win the race despite well-documented financial problems. Williams has a £49milion release clause in his Athletic Bilbao contract - a snip for one of the hottest properties in Europe.

Should he join the Catalans, that would leave room for former Leeds United sensation Raphinha to move on. The Brazilian has endured a mixed time at the Camp Nou since joining from the Whites two years ago.

Just nine entire 90 minutes highlights fitness concerns but Raphinha still managed 45 goal contributions in 87 games. Newcastle were one club reportedly sniffing around the 27-year-old before his Barcelona move.

Reports in Spain earlier this year claimed the Magpies would consider reigniting their interest as they search for a Miguel Almiron replacement. The Paraguayan international turned 30 in March and Newcastle are targeting a right-sided attacker, with question marks also being asked about Jacob Murphy’s quality.

But Aston Villa now appear the front-runners to bring Raphinha back to England. The report suggests Barca may need to lower their asking price, however, with sources quoting Joan Laporta’s demands at £70million.
