Alan Shearer was as emotional as anyone after Newcastle United ended the 70-year curse. Tears flowed around Wembley at the full-time whistle as the Magpies put Premier League leaders Liverpool to the sword.
While the post-match furore in London was jubilant, with a sea of black and white overwhelming the capital city, thousands of supporters back home flocked to St James’ Park. The scenes mirrored the post-takeover festivities in October 2021 - a seismic event offering hope that days like Sunday could become a reality.

For Shearer, a figure who already boasts iconic status at Newcastle, all of his dreams became reality. Beer - and lots of it - is exactly how the Geordie celebrated alongside the Toon heroes at Boxpark on Wembley Way.
“Where do I start?” he told The Rest Is Football podcast. “I’m definitely not hungover because I’ve been on it all day again. I started off first thing this morning after a couple of hours of sleep.
“Oh man, what a day. After being nervous, excited and all those things beforehand, it was just unf****ing believable man. I just haven’t experienced this before. The feeling, the adulation, the fans… oh man. Wembley is just a place for winners, isn’t it? I’ve been there as a fan as a loser and I’ve been there as a player as a loser.

The 54-year-old - who received a rapturous roar from the Newcastle end whenever he was projected onto the Wembley big screen - jetted to Amsterdam following a chance invitation from North Shields musician Sam Fender. With Fender’s name emblazoned on Newcastle’s cup-winning shirts as part of St James’ Park collaboration next summer, he was also welling up despite being 680 miles away in Berlin.
Even the hard-nosed Shearer shed a tear once Carabao Cup success was confirmed. His dad, also called Alan, passed away last May, and Newcastle’s triumph evoked special memories for the club’s all-time leading goalscorer.
“We were all emotional,” Shearer added. “I’ve never experienced anything like it. It was just absolutely brilliant. I had a year or two at the end because I thought of my old man. He was lucky enough to see the 1969 final when they won the Fairs Cup. I just wish he could’ve been there yesterday. Even in his last few days, he was on about Newcastle.

“He was in Berlin last night performing. I said to his agent ‘Who the hell books this gig by the way?’ He said it was done months ago! We FaceTimed him and he was crying real tears of joy. His song was blasting out of Wembley and the fans were all singing it.”
