Liverpool were gracious in defeat as Newcastle United ended their 70-year domestic trophy drought by winning the Carabao Cup.

Dan Burn headed the Magpies in front on the brink of half-time before Alexander Isak doubled the advantage shortly after the break. Federico Chiesa pulled one back in stoppage time but it was too little, too late for the Reds.

And not long after the full-time whistle, former defender Stephen Warnock spotted an embrace between Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk and Burn.

Describing the moment on BBC Radio 5 Live, Warnock said: “There was an embrace between Virgil van Dijk and Dan Burn.

“Van Dijk stood at the Newcastle huddle - he went around and shook every player's hand. He respected what Newcastle have done today. Class. A sign of respect for Newcastle.”

Eddie Howe compliments Liverpool

Liverpool manager Arne Slot shook the hand of every Newcastle player as they prepared to make their way up to the royal box to lift the trophy. Slot’s post-match comments were also appreciated by United fans.

Having felt the pain of losing the final two years ago against Manchester United, Howe was keen to praise the Reds.

Howe said: “I have to compliment Liverpool. Liverpool have been the best team in the Premier League by a mile this year consistently so we knew we had to raise our game today to have any chance of beating them.

“We almost needed everyone to give their maximum game and I felt they did. I have to pay compliments on how Liverpool handled themselves after because we've been there two years ago. It's a horrible feeling.

“I thought they were absolute class, the manager, the players. Really, really good. But yeah, the curse stuff for me never existed. It was in our hands.”

The day marked Newcastle’s first win over Liverpool in almost a decade. In the Premier Leaguethis season, the two teams drew 3-3 at St James’ Park before Slot’s men won the fixture at Anfield 2-0.
