Borussia Dortmund suffer ‘extremely painful’ blow just three days before Newcastle United clash

Borussia Dortmund have suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of one of their biggest rivals just three days before hosting Newcastle United in the Champions League.

Dortmund were hammered 4-0 at home to Bayern Munich on Saturday night. Dayot Upamecano opened the scoring before England striker Harry Kane netted a hat-trick.

“It was a deserved defeat for us.” said BVB boss Edin Terzic. “Everything we had planned for the game didn’t come together, especially in the opening stages - and then we found ourselves 2-0 down after eight minutes.

“It took us far too long to get into the game. We tried to exert some influence on the game, but we couldn’t match the pace or the ball control of our opponents.”

Midfielder Marcel Sabitzer added: “They went 1-0 up from the first corner of the game. Then we started to shake, we were wobbling. We had a good chance in the 45th minute. With a bit of luck, we go into half-time with the score at 2-1. But it wasn’t meant to be and it would be a stretch to say we deserved it.

“It’s extremely painful to go home after a defeat like that. They were the better team. In the second half, after their double chance, we had a brief spell: if we pulled a goal back, we might have been able to make a game of it.’’

The defeat was Dortmund’s first in the Bundesliga this campaign. They sit seven points off league leaders Bayer Leverkusen.

Newcastle visit the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday evening needing a result to keep their Champions League knockout stage hopes alive after losing to BVB in the first Group F meeting at St James’ Park.
