Aston Villa midfielder Douglas Luiz is reportedly the subject of interest from Newcastle United, Arsenal and Spanish giants Atletico Madrid as the transfer window enters its final hours.

The 24-year-old joined Villa from Manchester City in a £15million deal during the summer of 2019 and has gone on to become a key figure in the heart of their side.

His form at Villa Park led to a maiden call-up to Brazil’s senior squad just months later and Luiz has gone on to earn nine caps over the last three years.

However, Luiz is now into the final 12 months of his current deal and that has led to speculation of a move away during the final days of the summer transfer window.

Speaking after his side’s Carabao Cup win against Bolton Wanderers, a game in which Luiz scored direct from a corner-kick, Villa boss Steven Gerrard addressed the Brazilian’s wonder goal and contract situation.

The Liverpool legend said: “I can guarantee everyone that it wasn’t a fluke because I saw the exact same thing yesterday so, in less than 24 hours, he’s done the same thing twice!”

“I had a chat with Dougie, an interesting chat, we had a good conversation, really happy with what he has shown and I thought he backed his training performance. Pleased with his goal, pleased with his performance.”

The Mail have reported Atletico Madrid are keen to take the midfielder to Spain and are said to be ‘preparing’ a £20million offer to secure his services.

However, there is interest from a trio of clubs looking to offer Luiz a chance to remain in the Premier League with Newcastle, Arsenal and Chelsea all said to have registered an interest with Villa.

The Magpies have been linked with a move for several midfielders during the last week with the likes of Leicester City star Youri Tielemans, Chelsea’s Conor Gallagher and Wolverhampton Wanderers’ Belgian international Leander Dendoncker.
