'Always a Geordie' - Newcastle United star reacts as Bruno Guimaraes mocks Sunderland

Former Newcastle United captain Bruno Guimaraes scored his first goal for Arsenal against Sunderland.

Bruno Guimaraes showed his true Newcastle United colours after scoring for Arsenal against their bitter rivals Sunderland on Saturday night.

The Gunners won 2-0 at the Stadium of Light to continue their 100% start to the new Premier League campaign, with Guimaraes coming off the bench at half-time to open the scoring in the 58th minute.

Guimaraes’ superb 20-yard strike came just 121 seconds after goalkeeper David Raya saved Enzo Le Fee’s penalty at the other end. After finding the top right corner, the Brazilian wheeled away in celebration and mocked the Black Cats in the process.

The 28-year-old made a hand gesture by putting two of his fingers close together, which appeared to suggest that Sunderland were a small club in comparison to Newcastle. The gesture has gone down a treat with Magpies fans, many of whom have joked that they now forgive Guimaraes for quitting in the summer.

Toon supporters weren’t the only ones to take pleasure in the moment. Joelinton, a fellow Brazilian and close friend of Guimaraes, shared an image of his celebration on Instagram, captioned: “once a Geordie, always a Geordie”.

Speaking after the game, Guimaraes said: “A beautiful goal in a very good place. Everyone knows my past. I had an amazing history at Newcastle but now I'm trying to create a new history here and I've started in the right way."

The midfielder spent four-and-a-half years at Newcastle and wrote himself into the club’s history books by becoming the first captain in 56 years to lift a trophy after winning the Carabao Cup last year.

Newcastle fans remain torn over Guimaraes’ exit, which is likely to lead to a mixed reception when he returns to St James’ Park on November 23.

After leaving, Guimaraes said: "This is one of the toughest decisions of my life. When I arrived, the club was in a challenging position and I am incredibly proud of what we achieved together.

"I fell in love with this place. I really mean that. From my first day, the supporters, my teammates, Eddie and the staff, and everyone connected with the club made me and my family feel at home.”
