Well, Bruno Guimaraes’ transfer wish came true. He wanted Newcastle United to sign Matt Targett permanently and that became official on Wednesday evening.

It’s been just over three weeks since the Brazilian interrupted Targett’s post-match interview after the 2-0 victory over Arsenal and demanded ‘he must stay!’

That itself shows how popular Targett is in the Magpies dressing room, as well as being a reliable Premier League performer that helped keep the club in the Premier League against all the odds.

Head coach Eddie Howe wants to sign good people as well as good players. Targett, arriving from Aston Villa for a £15million, ticks both of those boxes.

The 26-year-old played every minute of the 16 games he was available for during his loan spell. And on what could have been his last appearance at St James’ Park in United colours, fans chanted “there’s only one Matty Targett”.

And as Targett put pen to paper on a four-year contract with Newcastle, he’ll hope to hear that song more regularly.

“I’m absolutely over the moon to sign here permanently,” Targett told NUFCTV in his first interview as a permanent United player. “I had such an enjoyable loan spell. The fans, the players, the staff all welcomed me. I loved my tim and I’m happy to be here for another four years.

“I spoke to the manager just before the Burnley game and he said he wanted to sign me. After the last game of the season, it went quiet for a bit. About a week ago, it started to liven up. We’ve been back and fortj but delighted it’s done.

“It’s probably the best dressing room I’ve been in, in terms of how many players make you feel welcome and how many leaders there are. It played a massive part (in my decision to join permanently).

“What we did in the second part of last season hopefully leads into this season. Everybody has that feel-good factor and I’m sure there will be a few more signings too. It’s exciting. We really want to kick on and get this club to the next level.

“I hope I can be a part of the club playing in Europe. I think we can try and get into Europe in the next few seasons, that would be a massive achievement.”
