France World Cup star Marcus Thuram is reportedly set to snub ‘serious’ interest from Newcastle United and hold out for a move to one of four European giants.

The Borussia Monchengladbach forward is now in the final months of his current contract with the Bundesliga club and talks over a new deal have failed to reach a successful conclusion. Thuram’s future and a possible move to St James Park has been the subject of intense speculation in recent weeks after Magpies star Allan Saint-Maximin admitted he has spoken to the forward about life on Tyneside.

That speculation was further heightened when United manager Eddie Howe revealed Thuram was one player he watched during the tournament in Qatar. However, the Magpies are believed to face serious competition should they make a move with the likes of Manchester United, Paris Saint-Germain, Inter Milan and Bayern Munich also believed to be interested in the former Guingamp star.

German reporter Christian Falk believes Howe and Newcastle are set to suffer disappointment in their bid to sign the 25-year-old as he waits for a firm offer from one of the esteemed quartet.

He told CaughtOffside: “Newcastle’s interest in Marcus Thuram was serious, that’s true. They decided already in this window that they won’t go to Newcastle. Everyone has to see what happened with Newcastle, nobody knows if they’ll get Champions League football.

Allan Saint-Maximin has reportedly done his best to try and convince Thuram to join the setup on Tyneside, with Eddie Howe admitting he is an admirer of the Frenchman, whilst reiterating there has been no contact between the clubs over a move. Thuram looks set to depart Germany either in January or in the summer and would add a physical presence to Newcastle’s attacking options.Allan Saint-Maximin has reportedly done his best to try and convince Thuram to join the setup on Tyneside, with Eddie Howe admitting he is an admirer of the Frenchman, whilst reiterating there has been no contact between the clubs over a move. “From Thuram’s side, they made a plan and decided to stay at Gladbach for the moment. If there’s a big offer, it has to come from a very big club – United is one of them, Bayern is one, Inter Milan and PSG. These four clubs are in their head. If they bring a good offer and Gladbach says ‘okay, for this money we have to sell him because we’ll lose him anyway’ they will do it.

“He won’t sign now at Newcastle as he’ll have so many options in the summer. But if one of these four clubs is knocking on his door then things could progress quickly.”
