Bruno Guimaraes admits Newcastle United are in a difficult moment - but has urged everybody to stick together.

The Magpies’ winless run in the Premier League extended to five matches after losing 2-1 to Chelsea on Sunday. Alexander Isak cancelled out Nicolas Jackson’s opener before Cole Palmer scored what proved to be the winner immediately after half-time.

“Frustrating,” the Brazilian said after the game. “My point of view is we have not been consistent all game. For 25 minutes in the first-half and second-half we were good but we were not consistent. There were moments when we were very vulnerable.

“We have to find a way to be consistent for the whole game. I think when we are at our best we can beat every team. I think at least we deserved a draw today.”

Newcastle had a big chance to equalise at Stamford Bridge when Isak jixned past Wesley Fofana and goalkeeper Roberto Sanchez. But rather than pass the ball to Joelinton, who had an empty net at his mercy, Isak took a extra touch and allowed Chelsea to recover and clear their lines through Moises Caicedo.

After missing big chances during last weekend’s 1-0 defeat at home to Brighton & Hove Albion, Guimaraes highlighted the lack of goals as an issue.

The two teams meet again in the Carabao Cup fourth round at St James’ Park on Wednesday.

Guimaraes added: “Scoring, we have to score. We had big chances to score. The last three or four games we have been many times in front of the keeper. Today we had chances to score. We have to play better and be consistent.

“Sad for today, it is a difficult moment, I am not happy at all. We need our fans on our side. We have two big games at home. We count of them and hope we are going to play well next game and get out this difficult moment.

“We have to work hard and not give up. Some moments we are good and some moments we are not. At the moment we need togetherness. We have to find a way to score and be clinical and be aggressive. We have to improve.”

Meanwhile, Guimaraes felt Fofana was perhaps lucky to stay on the pitch when the Chelsea defender prevented him from going one-v-one with Sanchez in the first-half.

Referee Simon Hooper waved away Guimaraes’ appeals and VAR didn’t intervene with the incident taking just outside the box. The midfielder hit back.

“Of course, of course - it is a clear foul,” he said. “My point of view is they should have at least checked because for me it was a chance to go one on one. Maybe it was a red card and the same player after got another yellow card so he would be sent off.

“They should have checked but we have to avoid to speak about this and speak about our way to play.”
