Based in his hometown, the second-tier club is where he began his footballing career. Schar spent 13 years with Wil ahead of his big move to FC Basel in 2012.

The 31-year-old was voted onto the club's board this week.

"FC Wil are the club of my childhood, youth and lifeblood," said Schar. "Being now able to help shape their strategy is perfect preparation after my playing career.

"I will try to bring my sporting knowledge to the club to help it progress.

"I've seen and experienced a lot in football, and will try to pass on the benefit of my experience."

Earlier this year, the defender completed a masters in sports management alongside playing consistently in Eddie Howe's starting XI.

Schar has now made well over 150 appearances for Newcastle but will be out of contract in June as things stand.

"I'm happy to be a part of FC Wil once more. It is my hometown, and this means a lot," he continued. "I used to stand behind the goal as a fan, and it's wonderful to be part of the club again. I love football, and hope to keep active as long as possible. I am proud of my playing career."

Schar then spoke about his future. At 31, he is one of the older members of Howe's side.

"Could I end it with Wil? I don't know whether that would be possible alongside being a director. But I've learned things don't turn out as you expect in football. So I'll take it a day at a time, and see where I end up."
