Newcastle United goalkeeper Karl Darlow, who is on loan at Hull City, has full confidence that Loris Karius can do a good job between the sticks against Manchester United in the Carabao Cup final. The former Liverpool man is expected to get the nod ahead of Mark Gillespie.

It may well have been Darlow stepping in for the suspended Nick Pope at Wembley. However, boss Eddie Howe gave him the green light to head out the exit door on a temporary basis when the Tigers came calling on the final day of the January transfer window.

He made his debut for the Championship side this weekend as they lost 1-0 to Bristol City. When asked whether he regrets the switch to East Yorkshire, he told Hull Live: “It’s hindsight, isn’t it? You never know what’s going to happen. For me, I wanted to come out and play football regularly, that’s a massive motivation for me to come in and play week in and week out to get in a rhythm again.

“Obviously a cup final is massive, don’t get me wrong. Every player wants to play in a cup final, but for a one-off, it’s tough to say because the situation might not have happened if I was still there. For me, at the time, making the decision to come and play football week in and week out and that’s what I’ve come to do.”

He added: “Loris Karius is a good goalkeeper. You don’t end up playing for Liverpool and playing in a Champions League final for no reason. They’ll be confident, defensively they’re good as well so hopefully, we come out with the trophy, and nobody will talk about that in the future.”

Darlow’s game time at Newcastle has dried up over recent times and he will now be looking to get plenty of game time under his belt at Hull. The 32-year-old has been on the books at St James’ Park since making the move to the North East from Nottingham Forest back in 2014.
