Double Newcastle United injury blow confirmed as £32m duo miss Liverpool clash - but key man returns

Newcastle United are without Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier for the visit to Liverpool.

Newcastle United are without two key players for this evening's Premier League clash at Liverpool (kick-off 8pm).

As reported by NewcastleWorld earlier today, England international duo Kieran Trippier and Callum Wilson miss the trip to Anfield because of injury.

Trippier played a full 90 minutes as the Magpies lost 3-1 to Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day. Wilson, meanwhile, was introduced in the 55th minute in place of Miguel Almiron.

That will likely see Tino Livramento replace Trippier at right-back while Alexander Isak is expected to lead the line having scored at Anfield on his debut in 2022.

The pair's absence inflicts further injury misery on United. Their treatment room already hosts eight senior players, including Sandro Tonali, Nick Pope, Jacob Murphy, Harvey Barnes, Joe Willock, Elliot Anderson, Javier Manquillo and Matt Targett.

However, in a boost for head coach Eddie Howe, club captain Jamaal Lascelles is back with the squad after missing the Forest loss.

United haven't won at Anfield since 1994, while Howe has lost his 11 last matches against the Reds. Jurgen Klopp's side sit top of the Premier League table, 13 points above Newcastle.

Howe's men start 2024 in difficult form having lost six of their last seven matches in all competitions, exiting both the Champions League and Carabao Cup, and slipping to ninth in the table.
