Eddie Howe has addressed Bruno Guimaraes’ future at Newcastle United after the midfielder revealed ‘doubt’ over his contract situation.

The Brazilian has held talks over improved terms to reflect his incredible form since joining from Ligue 1 side Lyon 18 months ago.

However, Guimaraes revealed in New Jersey last week that “there is no news”. He reiterated his desire to remain at St James’ Park admitted “but the doubt is ongoing so, let’s see.”

Despite the 25-year-old expressing his uncertainty, Howe believes Guimaraes is very happy on Tyneside - meaning Newcastle are protected from any potential approaches from other clubs.

“I don’t think Bruno wants to leave,” said Howe, speaking ahead of this weekend’s Sela Cup double header against Fiorentina and Villarreal. “I feel we’re protected enough but the most important person in all of this is Bruno.

“I think Bruno sees this season as a huge opportunity for him to play on the best stage that you can and to try to help Newcastle grow.

“I think that is the most important thing, not necessarily if a club comes in. It’s where the player feels his home is. I think he feels his home is Newcastle.”

Guimaraes revealed last summer he had “a conversation” with Real Madrid but insisted he wants to become a legend at Newcastle.

“Real Madrid is the best team in the world. It is nice but it was just a conversation. It was nothing. I feel at home here. It’s the best thing that has happened in my life. I am living my dream here and hope to be a legend.”

Asked about fears Madrid could come calling again this summer, Howe replied: “I don’t want you fearful of anything! I will try to put you at ease.

“You can never tell what is going to happen in football. I can’t sit here and say clubs won’t be interested in Bruno because for me he is an outstanding player but I see a player that is very committed to this football club.”

Guimaraes is under contract at Newcastle until 2026.
