The Blyth-born defender picked up his fifth yellow card of the league campaign in the early stages of the Magpies’ 3-1 win at Nottingham Forest on Sunday for bringing down Morgan Gibbs-White.
It was a caution that left Eddie Howe unhappy as the United boss believed play should have been stopped moments before Burn’s challenge when Tino Livramento was elbowed in the face by midfielder Ryan Yates.

“We knew we were going to lose Dan at some stage and Fabby and Joey are in the same position so I’m probably pleased we’re not losing them all at the same time. It’s a huge blow to lose Dan, he’s done very well this season.”
Premier League rules state that any player shown five bookings in the opening 19 league matches is suspended for one match, something which impacted Bruno Guimaraes, Anthony Gordon and Kieran Trippier last season.
Joelinton and Fabian Schar are also walking a disciplinary tightrope. The pair must make it to matchday 20 - the visit to Tottenham Hotspuron January 2, 2025 - if they are to avoid a one-match ban.

After the 19-game mark, the the threshold changes to 10 bookings, 32 games and a two-match ban.
Any player shown 15 bookings over the course of the season is handed a three-match ban but no player has ever been cautioned that many times during a single Premier League campaign.
