Newcastle are eyeing a move for an England U21 champion, according to reports

Newcastle United have quickly developed a reputation for signing young English talent. Anthony Gordon started the trend in January, while young full backs Tino Livramento and Lewis Hall were added to the ranks in the summer window.

New reports from The Mirror claim that more could be on the way in 2024 and one name on the radar will be a very familiar face to Gordon. Emile Smith-Rowe was a member of the England U21 team which were crowned European Champions last summer and he was amongst the star performers in the team alongside Player of the Tournament Gordon.

Smith-Rowe played a part in every game on the road to England’s historic victory and scored two goals during the tournament. The 23-year-old, who had previously tasted success in the U17 World Cup six years ago, was regarded as one of the standout players of the tournament and was a catalyst for much of England’s successful play.

The midfielder also showcased similar standards of form during his breakthrough season at Arsenal in 2021/22 when he scored 10 goals in 33 Premier League appearances. However, despite his encouraging breakthrough campaign Smith-Rowe has struggled to make the starting lineup at Arsenal and he has barely featured for Mikel Arteta’s men over the last two seasons.

The midfielder was involved in just 12 league games for the entirety of last season with many of those coming from the bench, while this season he has played just 10 minutes of top-flight football. The Mirror claims Newcastle would be keen to sign the midfielder who is capable of operating both in the middle and on the right wing.

Newcastle’s current right wing options include Miguel Almiron and Jacob Murphy, while their central midfield options are stacked with talent including Bruno Guimaraes, Joelinton, Sean Longstaff, Elliot Anderson and Sandro Tonali, with ex-team mate Joe Willock also battling back from injury.

However, there is some uncertainty surrounding Tonali’s long term availability this season as he was sent home from international duty, amid betting allegations. Smith-Rowe will also hope to rebuild his senior England career ahead of Euro 2024. The youngster won three caps for England in 2021 and scored one goal, but has not made Gareth Southgate’s team in two years due to lack of first team football.
