Eddie Howe bombshell as Manchester United discover Newcastle United clause

Newcastle United will benefit if Manchester United appoint Eddie Howe as their new manager.

Newcastle United will be due a compensation package if Manchester United appoint Eddie Howe as their new manager.

Howe walked away from Newcastle at the end of July, just 23 days before their Premier League opener against Liverpool. Matthias Jaissle, who had been managing in the Saudi Pro League with Al Ahli, was appointed as his successor.

The 48-year-old spent four-and-a-half years in charge of the Magpies, guiding them to two Champions League finishes and their first major trophy in 56 years after winning the Carabao Cup in March 2025.

But after failing to replace top scorer Alexander Isak last summer, Howe endured a difficult campaign as Newcastle finished 12th in the Premier League and lost both Tyne-Wear derbies to Sunderland. His side also suffered an 8-3 aggregate defeat to Barcelona in the last 16 of the Champions League.

While many supporters remained grateful for what Howe had achieved as Newcastle boss, sections of the fanbase had called for a change in the dugout. Howe retained the full support of the club’s hierarchy and initially decided to stay on, only to have a change of heart during pre-season.

Newcastle had also sold Anthony Gordon and Sandro Tonali when captain Bruno Guimaraes informed the club of his desire to leave. Howe subsequently departed, and just a few days after Jaissle’s appointment, Guimaraes joined Premier League rivals Arsenal for £75million.

Howe had planned to take a break from football but, according to reports, has told Manchester United he is open to replacing Michael Carrick. The Wallsend-born boss is expected to be sacked following a poor start to the campaign that has left the club 16th in the table, one point above the relegation zone.

Newcastle United due compensation if Eddie Howe joins Manchester United

Should the Red Devils officially move for Howe, Newcastle will be due a compensation package of around £3million.

As part of Howe’s departure agreement, the Magpies built in a degree of protection in case he joined a rival club in the months that followed. It is understood Howe still had three years remaining on his contract when he chose to step down.
