Eddie Howe has provided his honest view on Everton’s red card against Newcastle United.

The Toffees were reduced to 10 men on 83 minutes when Allan hacked down substitute Allan Saint-Maximin as he broke forward.

Match referee Craig Pawson initially awarded a yellow card for a cynical foul before changing his mind after reviewing the incident at the VAR pitchside monitor.

The Magpies were actually worse off as the dismissal galvanized the Goodison Park home crowd, whose side found a 99th-minute winner through Alex Iwobi.

Asked about the red card, Howe said: “I didn’t immediately think when the tackle was made that it was a red card. I didn’t have that feeling that it was.

“But sometimes, tackles can look worse when slowed down. I haven’t really seen the incident.

“I saw it flash up on the screen but I didn’t really have a good look. I need to have a proper look at it to give my opinion.”

Newcastle weathered the storm in the early stages and ended the first-half in control.

However, that all changed after the break and United’s lack of quality in the final third was stark.

Howe said: “First-half I thought we were pretty good. I was pleased, I thought we had control, had some good passages of play and had movements that gave them problems.

“It was the second-half where I felt we lost control of the game. We weren’t as composed and we didn’t use the ball as well.

“The solution for that is clear, we have to improve individually.

“We lost too many duels in the second-half as well which is hugely disappointing because those individual battles win you games.”

Howe’s men head to Dubai on Friday for a warm-weather training camp with the next game not until April 3 when they travel to Tottenham Hotspur.
