Eddie Howe was left with a “mixture of emotions” after Newcastle United claimed their first victory of the season against Burnley.

Callum Wilson’s first-half goal decided a nervy affair to move Eddie Howe’s side off the bottom of the Premier League table and also record their first clean sheet.

The three points came at the 15th attempt, and Howe celebrated with a delighted St James’ Park crowd at full-time.

‘Mixture of emotions’

“Mixture of emotions really,” Howe said. “Definite relief. Very proud of the team.

“It was a very difficult game physically, as it always is against Burnley but I thought we defended very, very well today.

“We took a lot of positives from the midweek game against Norwich and I think to a man, really, really stepped up again defensively.

“We started the game quite slowly - first 20 minutes was a bit disappointing but once we scored, there were spells in the second-half where I thought we were excellent.

“We had to hang on at the end. It was a nervy end to the match.”

‘A really relationship with the supporters’

Howe added: “The relationship we’ve quickly built with the supporters has been a really special one. I thought they were absolutely magnificent today for the club - I can’t thank them enough and it’s just an amazing feeling to get that first win for them as a big thank you for everything they’ve given to me and the team the last few weeks.

“We knew how desperate they were for that first victory, we all were, but to get it was an amazing feeling. The reaction at the end, the scenes with the players, that can only galvanize us to hopefully move forward positively.”
