Newcastle United midfielder Bruno Guimaraes played 82 minutes as Brazil were held to a 1-1 draw in Venezuela.

Brazil took the lead in the 43rd minute through Raphinha but were pegged back moments after the restart when Telasco Segovia equalised. Real Madrid star Vinicius Junior later missed a penalty.

Selecao continued to push for an equaliser, which saw Guimaraes replaced by Arsenal’s Gabriel Martinelli inside the remaining 10 minutes. However, they were forced to settle for a point, one that leaves them in third in the World Cup qualifier table behind Argentina and Colombia.

Guimaraes was handed a 6/10 by Goal, who wrote: “Always up for the defensive stuff, and flew into tackles with aplomb. Asking him to do much in creative terms is foolish, though.”

Meanwhile, Globo Esporte dished out the same mark and said: “It took him a few minutes to find the best positioning at the edge of the box, but after that he played well.

“He had to work hard to occupy spaces in a defensive transition that overloaded the defensive midfielders. With the ball, he distributed passes well and created vertical actions.”

Dorival Junior's side are still on track to secure a place in America in 2026 with the top six qualifying automatically.

Next up for Guimaraes & Co is Uruguay in the early hours of Wednesday morning.

“Overall, I think it was a good game, a well-played game,” Junior said. “Every point is important.

“It's natural that the expectations created by what we did on the field may have meant that we deserved a better result. But I'm satisfied with our performance, proposing the game at all times, constantly looking for the opponent's goal and playing a game that is in keeping with the characteristics of Brazilian football.”
