The 19-year-old has started in between the sticks for the Fifers this term but it’s now claimed he’s heading to the North East for a trial.

According to the Daily Record, Smith will train with United this week after East Fife gave it the green light.

Smith previously trained with Championship side Stoke City but now Newcastle want to get a good look at him.

The Magpies have made a big effort to strengthen their academy ranks this summer.
