Newcastle United are reportedly set to open talks with Anthony Gordon over a new contract.

Gordon is due to report back for pre-season training this week after being handed extra time off after he was part of the England squad that reached the Euro 2024 final.

The 23-year-old was the subject of genuine interest from Liverpool last month when the Magpies frantically attempted to offload players in order to comply with Premier League Profitability and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

In the end, Elliot Anderson and Yankuba Minteh were sacrificed after they joined Nottingham Forest and Brighton & Hove Albion for a combined £68million.

The possibility of joining his boyhood club is said to have affected Gordon but Newcastle want to show their commitment by opening talks over a new contract, as per The Athletic.

The former Everton man moved to St James’ Park for £45m in January 2022 on a ‘long-term deal’ and was named the club’s player of the season for the 2023-24 campaign after claiming 11 goals and 10 assists.

According to Mail Online, Newcastle chief executive Darren Eales proposed a double deal worth a total of £120m for Gordon to join Liverpool for £75m and defender Joe Gomez to head in the opposite direction for £45m.

Suggestions that Gordon’s head has been turned by Liverpool’s interest were played down by Howe in Germany last month.

“He’s an integral part of what we’re doing,” Howe said. “I’m confident he is okay. I think you can only judge Anthony on what he has given Newcastle on the pitch. He’s been committed.

“We’ve had no conversations over the summer where it has been fractious or negative. He’s always been the Anthony Gordon who has given absolutely everything to Newcastle and I want to make that clear to all our supporters.”
