Viewers watching I’m a Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here! on Thursday evening were left “gagged” as it emerged that former Health Secretary Matt Hancock had his first-ever celebrity crush on a Newcastle United legend.

It’s nearing the end of the hit ITV show and contestants are starting to open up with stories from their personal lives. Last night Hancock joined Lioness Jill Scott, comedian Seann Walsh and Rugby star Mike Tindall by the creek for a chat about dream dinner guests.

The celebrities tasked each other with picking one guest who was dead, one who was alive and one who was a fictional character. The name picked by the controversial politician certainly turned some heads.

Hancock began by picking John F Kennedy as his guest from the dead - “because I think he’s absolutely fascinating and apparently one of the most charming people who ever lived”. He also picked Disney character Pocahontas as his fictional guest, which was mocked by Walsh before adding a nude Marilyn Monroe as a naked chef.

However, it wasn’t Hancock’s strange fictional choice or randy thoughts about Monroe that got the internet talking, but rather the fact he had the hots for a Newcastle United star when he was a youngster. The politician picked Magpies legend Kevin Keegan as his living guest. Jill Scott retorted: “That was your celebrity crush!”

Hancock replied in the affirmative which left viewers at home laughing. On Friday morning one Twitter user wrote: “Is Kevin Keegan actually Matt Hancock’s celebrity crush or did I dream that conversation?”

Last night others said “I hope Kevin Keegan gagged when he heard that he’s Matt Hancock would love to meet him and have him over for dinner” and labelled the Conservative a “gay icon”.

It’s no secret that Hancock is a Newcastle United fan. As well as often having the black-and-white jersey in video call backgrounds, when speaking to the Northern Echo in 2020, he said: “I’m a Newcastle fan because my uncle Dave is a Geordie and when I was growing up in Chester, he used to take me every Christmas to the Man U/Newcastle game. That was in the era of Kevin Keegan, Alan Shearer, and the heady days when we got almost to the top of the table. It has its ups and downs being a Newcastle fan but it all stems from Uncle Dave.”

From just down the road, Sunderland’s Scott also joined in picking her dream dinner guests. The Lioness opted for Joey from Friends, Princess Diana and Roy Keane. She added: “Princess Diana is such an inspirational woman, I just want to hear the whole story. If I can have a naked chef, David Beckham.”
