Newcastle United will get their preparations for one of the most exciting seasons in their recent history underway on Saturday when they make the short trip to Gateshead.

Eddie Howe’s side will take on their National League neighbours on Saturday lunchtime as they face Mike Williamson’s men for the second successive pre-season. The Heed enjoyed a positive season in non-league’s top tier last time out as they secured a lower mid-table finish despite seeing their squad decimated by a season-long battle with a lengthy injury list. Former Magpies defender Williamson also led the club to their first ever major Wembley cup final as they fell to a narrow defeat against FC Halifax Town in the FA Trophy Final.

For the Magpies, the fixture will be all about getting back into the on-pitch routine and laying the foundations for what they hope will be another thrilling season on Tyneside after last season’s successful push for a Champions League place.

Ahead of the meeting of the Tyneside neighbours, NewcastleWorld gives you the latest information as the Magpies kick off their pre-season campaign.

Where and when does Gateshead v Newcastle take place?

The game will take place on Saturday 15th July at Gateshead’s International Stadium ad kick-off time is 12.30pm.

What is the latest team news?

Nick Pope, Emil Krafth and Joe Willock are not in consideration as they work their way back to fitness following injuries. Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick and Isaac Hayden are not currently training with the Magpies first-team and a number of players have only recently returned from breaks after being on international duty last month.

Gateshead could hand starts to a number of former Magpies academy players with the likes of Adam Campbell, Greg Olley and Louis Storey all forming part of Williamson’s squad. There was some talk former United keeper Rob Elliot could feature against his old club but the loan signing of Norwich City youngster Archie Mair means that is now unlikely.

What happened the last time the two sides met?

It is actually just over 12 months since Newcastle faced their National League neighbours in a friendly. However, unlike tomorrow’s meeting at the International Stadium, that picture was held behind closed doors at the Magpies training ground.

A Miguel Almiron brace and a goal apiece from Sean Longstaff, Matt Ritchie and Joelinton gave Eddie Howe’s men a 5-1 win, with Paul Blackett scoring a consolation goal for the Heed. The last time the two sides meet in front of supporters was in the summer of 2015 as a Papiss Cisse penalty gave Steve McClaren a win in his first game in charge of the Magpies.

Are tickets still available for the game?

No, unfortunately the game is now a complete sell-out, with over 7,200 supporters expected to be at the International Stadium.

Gateshead have announced there will be a live stream available with coverage getting underway at 12.20pm.

Supporters can purchase a pass to watch the entire 90 minutes via National League TV and further details are available on the Heed’s official website here. The Magpies have confirmed they will not take any share of the streaming revenue or gate receipts.
