Anthony Gordon was named alongside Kevin De Bruyne, Rodri and Pedro Porro in the former Tottenham Hotspur manager's team of the week

Harry Redknapp picked Anthony Gordon in his Premier League team of the week despite Newcastle United's loss to Manchester City.

An energetic first-half performance resulted in the Magpies being ahead at the break - with Gordon front and centre of the action. His stunning effort from distance curled past Stefan Ortega and put Newcastle 2-1 up.

For the first hour, Gordon looked back to his best after several undercooked performances in recent weeks. He faded in the second half - as did Newcastle - with Eddie Howe hooking him with minutes remaining.

Manchester City ultimately pierced a dagger through Toon fans’ hearts to snatch a 91st-minute winner. United could not cope with Kevin De Bruyne, who came on midway through the second half and inspired a late comeback.

Despite the defeat, Gordon, who admitted he is relishing a two-week break after the game, impressed enough to earn a spot in Redknapp’s team of the week. The former West Ham United, Bournemouth and Tottenham Hotspur manager highlighted how poorly England stalwart Kyle Walker coped with the winger.

“He may have been on the losing side but Anthony Gordon couldn’t have done much more against City,” Redknapp wrote in his BetVictor column. “He was fantastic. Not many players give Kyle Walker such a hard time but this guy was so dangerous.

“He’s always had tremendous pace, but he’s really worked on his end product, and that was a brilliant finish. He plays with so much desire and I’d be shocked if he’s not in the next England squad, it seems a no-brainer to me!”
