‘He wants’ - Newcastle United told £30m transfer target will make transfer move this summer

Aaron Ramsdale is reportedly seeking for a summer move after being shunned by Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta

Newcastle United have a clear path to rescuing Aaron Ramsdale from Arsenal this summer, according to reports. The goalkeeper will be allowed to leave the Emirates after falling out of favour with Mikel Arteta. While the Gunners have impressed again in 2023-24, their dilemma between the sticks has left a sour taste all season.

Arteta brutally axed Ramsdale just four games into the campaign, replacing him with David Raya, who arrived on loan from Brentford. Fans were torn as Ramsdale had starred for Arsenal throughout last season’s title charge.

At the time, Arteta dismissed the decision - insisting he needed “two quality players” for each position. But comments from Ramsdale’s dad poured fuel on the fire and the relationship has soured since.

The Gunners’ bold call has been justified in recent weeks, with Raya proving the hero in a Champions League penalty shoot-out win over Porto. Just days earlier, Ramsdale made a calamitous error against Brentford that almost surrendered top spot in the Premier League.

The 25-year-old’s position is becoming untenable in North London and he will likely seek first-team football once the window opens. Newcastle are one of several top-flight clubs reportedly keeping tabs on the situation.

Nick Pope is the undisputed first choice for Eddie Howe but has been injured since December with a shoulder injury. Martin Dubravka has plugged the gap in his absence but, at 25, is not viewed as the long-term answer.

Italian sports journalist Fabrizio Romano is reporting that Ramsdale will be available for transfer should the Magpies make a move. He told his YouTube channel: “But for Ramsdale, in the summer, it’s going to be time to look at new solutions because he wants to play. He can’t stay at Arsenal and be on the bench regularly.

“That’s why Arsenal will look at opportunities for Ramsdale but Ramsdale himself will explore options around the market to find a new solution.”
