Newcastle United were handed a fresh injury concern during their defeat to Everton on Thursday night.

Club captain Jamaal Lascelles limped off in the closing stages as the Magpies lost 3-0 at Goodison Park after goals from Dwight McNeil, Abdoulaye Doucoure and Beto in the remaining 20 minutes.

Although United head coach Eddie Howe played down the severity of the injury, Lascelles will have little time to recover with a trip to Tottenham Hotspur next up on Sunday.

"I don't think it's a serious one," Howe revealed. "I think it's a dead leg which is a knock to his thigh I think. Fingers crossed he'll be OK but I don't know at this moment."

Lascelles adds to the Magpies' growing injury list, which currently stands at a staggering 13 players, including the suspended Sandro Tonali.

As a result, Howe was forced to name another depleted bench consisting of two goalkeepers, three under-21s players, plus Paul Dummett, Lewis Hall, Emil Krafth and Matt Ritchie.

"We have to be better but yes there are reasons behind every performance and we have struggled to change our game in running to try without the attacking options we feel we need," said Howe.

"That's not there for us and it's a big miss. We've got outstanding players that aren't there for us. The longer it goes on the harder it gets but that's not to say it's impossible."

Newcastle have won just once away from home in the Premier League this season - the 8-0 win at Sheffield United in September - ahead of facing Spurs.

Howe's men can leapfrog Spurs in the table if they beat Ange Postecoglou's men, who are five games without a win.
