Newcastle United favourite Joelinton hopes to return from injury “very soon” - hinting at a comeback before the end of the season.

The Brazilian, who this week signed a new long-term contract with the Magpies, has been sidelined since the Tyne-Wear derby victory at Sunderland on January 6 because of a thigh injury.

“It’s been very difficult,” said the 27-year-old. “It has been a difficult season for me, it’s been stop-start because of injuries and then the big injury. It has been the first time I have been out for so long.

“I’m not going to lie, it has been very frustrating for me, a difficult challenge but I’m working hard to come back fit and stronger, and try to avoid more injuries.

“The recovery has been good and there have been a lot of positive things. I’m on the pitch already running and passing the ball. There are still a few weeks to go but I am positive I will be back very soon.”

There have been suggestions Joelinton could return for the month of May, where United face Burnley, Brighton and Hove Albion, Manchester United and Brentford in their hunt for European qualification.

“I can’t wait to be back at St James’ Park to play for the fans and be back with the team,” Joelinton added. “It has been a difficult season for everybody with a lot of injuries.

“When you are out and you can do nothing to help the team it is difficult. I want to be available again, to be fit and help the guys on the pitch. I want to be back before the end of the season to reach our goals.”
