The 63-year-old revealed following his Toon exit in October 2021 that he may never manage again. Bruce told The Telegraph: “I think this might be my last job. It's not just about me, it's taken its toll on my whole family because they are all Geordies and I can't ignore that.

“When we were doing ok results wise, it was ‘yeah but the style of football is rubbish’ or I was just ‘lucky’. It was ridiculous and persistent, even when the results were good.”

Blackpool sit third bottom and winless following a 2-2 draw with Wycombe Wanderers. Speaking after the appointment, Bruce said: “I’d like to thank Simon, Julian and David for giving me this great opportunity. I look forward to meeting all of the staff and players in the coming days as we prepare for what we all hope will be an exciting season at Bloomfield Road.”
