Dan Burn admitted feeling “disappointed” after Newcastle United were held to a goalless draw by Everton.

Despite having the better chances, the Magpies were forced to settle for a point at Goodison Park. Victory would have lifted Newcastle into the top four but they go into the international break sixth - a fact that could change depending on how Brighton and Tottenham Hotspur fare today.

Anthony Gordon had a nightmare on his third return to Everton, missing a penalty and squandering a brilliant one-on-one chance over the bar. Toon stalwart Burn - one of United’s better performers on the day - was unhappy with the result but noted the improved away performance.

Eddie Howe revealed 10 days ago that honest discussions were held following the 3-1 defeat to Fulham. Burn told Sky Sports: “I think so (whether two points were dropped). It was a much better performance by us.

“We’ve been poor away from home this season so we wanted to have that same mentality we had at home to (Manchester) City last week. I thought we were a lot better and battled well. We had to deal with the physicality of them. But I’m disappointed we didn’t come away with three points.

“Fulham was a wake-up call. We were getting a little bit complacent. The gaffer said we had some honest conversations - and we did. It’s always quite an intimidating atmosphere at Goodison and we dealt with that well.

“We always back Gordy (Gordon) to score them, he’s been an amazing player since he signed. He was a great player for Everton. It’s one of those things, he missed it but we wanted to pull a result out for him. He’ll be hitting a little bit but I’m sure there’ll be plenty more.”

The 6ft 7in defender was also honest about Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s potential penalty shout late on. Burn tangled with the Everton striker in the box but VAR decided not to intervene.

“It’s one of them, if the ref gives it, that probably doesn’t get overturned,” Burn added. “I know the referee’s call has been a big thing this year. I felt Dominic kick me but any time there’s contact in the box, as a defender, you’re worried.”
