Dan Burn is in talks with Newcastle United over an improved contract.

Newcastle United have opened talks with Dan Burn over a new contract, NewcastleWorld understands.

The Blyth-born defender has been a magnificent signing for the Magpies since joining from Brighton and Hove Albion 18 months ago. Not only has he been a regular in the starting XI but his leadership behind the scenes has proved invaluable.

Last season, the 31-year-old was forced to move out of position from central defence to left-back and played every Premier League game in a backline that recorded the joint-best defensive record in the division as well as secure Champions League football.

Newcastle confirmed last month Burn had triggered an automatic one-year contract extension after meeting a certain number of appearances.

However, it is NewcastleWorld ‘s understanding that talks have taken place over improved terms, which will likely take him beyond his current 2025 expiry date, to reflect his important standing in the squad.

“Dan Burn’s an incredible player, in my opinion, and an incredible person, I think what he gives you, you can’t measure,” said Eddie Howe last season. “Very similar to Sean (Longstaff), the qualities that he brings to the team.

“As I say, (it’s) sometimes not measurable what those types of players give you, the strength they can give you in certain moments. We really value Dan very highly in whatever position he plays, and his versatility is important for us as well.

“I cannot credit Dan enough. I know I keep saying this, but he is so good at the training ground and around the group.”

Burn and matchday captain Trippier were the only Newcastle players to feature in all 38 league games last season. Burn is one of Howe’s most trusted and dependable characters with his versatility a huge bonus ahead of a busy season which will see the club enter four competitions.
